I was a performer at the NY Renaissance Faire for ten years, working my way from improv street character to fighter/jouster. I’m still there several times a season, singing with my band (which, in turn, grew out of a stunt show back in the day).
Sure, the faires aren’t historically accurate; it wouldn’t be a particularly pleasant experience if it were (Neil Gaiman speaks to this in Sandman: The Wake). It’s more of a visit to a fantasy land, complete with living chess games, maypole dances, artisan demos, music, tournament jousts, fantastic costumes, trunk shows, and Shakespeare. It may not be everyone’s cuppa, but for many it’s a fun day out with the sort of entertainment you don’t get to see anywhere else.
Best souvenir I ever took home from Faire: my husband. Met him at my first improv rehearsal in early June. We were engaged on Labor Day weekend. Just celebrated our 14th anniversary. Image may be NSFW.
